Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How Pluribus Will End... Currently.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the hit program reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Does Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why not reference the classics?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
