The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Selection in England's Ashes Squad
England have chosen a 12-man selection just two days before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the tourists will delay until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, indicating there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir enters the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five previous Tests.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side relying on seamers remains the more likely decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to offer some spin while also strengthening the lower order.
However the coach has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they come out and excel out here.”
