The network's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
