The English Team to Start the European Championship 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium
The England national team will embark on their Euro 2028 journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they secure the expected qualification for a competition taking place in most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not welcomed an England men’s fixture since the spring of 2016, when Turkey were defeated 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to host the Three Lions for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.
England are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, if they top Group B, their round of 16 match would occur at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean starting the knockouts at Everton’s ground.
Competition Kickoff and Demonstration
The tournament was launched at an ceremony in central London on Wednesday night. Senior figures from Uefa and the organizing bodies were barracked as they arrived the venue by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged Israel to be expelled from the sport because of the conflict in Gaza.
Banners were displayed with messages saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Fixture List
The opening game of the tournament will be played at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on Friday 9 June, a fixture that will include Wales if they make it.
Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at 5:00 PM.
It is anticipated that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for European club finals from next season, will appeal to households and help reach a broader range of viewers.
Participating Countries
The Irish team are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.
All four host countries’ teams will participate in the qualification process; two reserved places will be set aside for any that do not reach Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
Stadiums and Knockout Stage
Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals held at each country’s national stadium.
The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in Belfast, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be renovated in time, on a date in late 2026.
Official Statement
“The event will be a championship for the followers and a festival of everything we cherish about the game – its fervor and capacity to unite individuals.”
More than three million tickets, a record for a UEFA European Championship, are anticipated to be released to supporters.
