The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
