Putin Pledges Continuous Energy Supplies to India in Rebuff of US Demands

During a defiant message to the West, Leader Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to maintain “uninterrupted” deliveries of crude oil to India. These remarks came during a summit where both heads of state met in the Indian capital and asserted their bilateral ties were “resistant to foreign coercion.”

A Signal Directed at the West

This affirmation, made on Friday, appeared to be a pointed rebuke at the United States and its allies, which have tried to urge New Delhi into reducing its historical ties with Moscow. The backdrop is in response to earlier American measures, notably the imposition of import duties targeting New Delhi because of its buying of discounted Russian crude.

“Moscow remains a dependable supplier of oil and gas and everything necessary for the growth of India’s industry,” Putin said. “Moscow stands willing to keep guaranteeing the consistent delivery of fuel for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, while not naming energy explicitly, echoed the theme by saying that “energy security has been a key and vital cornerstone of the India-Russia partnership.”

Defying American Pressure

Before the summit, via a TV appearance, Putin had criticized American pressure regarding India's energy purchases. He argued, “If the US can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, then why can't India enjoy the identical right?”

Putin's arrival was his initial visit to India since the start of the war in Ukraine, and both sides engaged in a deliberate attempt to demonstrate that the bond between the heads of state remained intact.

A Warm Welcome

Taking an notable step, Modi met Putin right off the plane. Both leaders shared a warm hug like close allies before enjoying a private dinner the night before the summit.

The Indian prime minister referred to India's partnership with Russia as “a lodestar” and noted it was “built on reciprocal esteem and deep trust.”

Reaffirming Defence and Economic Partnerships

The bilateral summit produced several significant pacts regarding defence and economic cooperation. A major outcome was the finalization of an economic cooperation programme extending until 2030, which aims to increase twofold commerce to a hundred billion USD each year by the target year.

Furthermore pledged to restructure their military partnership. While Russia continues to be India's primary exporter of defence equipment, its share has reduced lately as India works to broaden its procurement.

The official release emphasized an agreement on the joint production of advanced weapons platforms, although specific mention of systems like the Su-57 fighter jet were omitted.

Overall, Russia and India affirmed that in the “present intricate, tense, and uncertain international environment, Russian-Indian ties stay resilient to outside forces.”
