Patrick Bamford Signs With the Blades Despite Initiating Derogatory Chants Targeting Coach Chris Wilder
Patrick Bamford is now a member of Sheffield United just seven months after leading disrespectful chants directed at their manager, Wilder.
This experienced striker, a free agent after departing from Leeds, has put pen to paper on a deal joining the Championship club in difficulty through the winter. Bamford's lengthy time at Elland Road concluded through agreement in August.
Among the player's last memorable actions as a Leeds player was to lead abusive songs about Wilder during the club’s promotion celebrations this spring. Currently, the one-cap England international is set to play under Wilder as Sheffield United's boss looks to pull the team he loves away from the bottom places.
Past History Between the Striker and the Manager
Both men had history before Leeds moved up back to the Premier League last season while Sheffield United lost the promotion decider by Sunderland. Wilder called Bamford as “a muppet” back when the roles were reversed during the 2018-19 season and the Blades won automatic promotion while Leeds United missed out in the playoffs.
Making Amends and Looking Ahead
Everything appears to have been forgiven and forgotten with United, the league's lowest scorers, in desperate need of a boost in attack while Bamford hoping to resurrect his career.
The song about Wilder went viral this spring. A repentant Bamford and the Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, phoned the Sheffield United manager the next day.
Wilder stated at the time: “Had a conversation with Patrick recently and I have no problem whatsoever with it. I’m not sure about the words used from a fellow pro! However I appreciated and admired him calling me.
“We spent a short while and similarly I talked with Daniel Farke too and had a longer discussion together and he is a super guy, a top guy. When I was playing we would give it and accept it and that’s part and parcel of football at every level, including a Sunday morning. I've got absolutely no issue. I am cool with it and I said that to Patrick.”
Recent Career Struggles
Bamford made 18 appearances with Leeds United last season however the former Nottingham Forest, Chelsea & Middlesbrough player has struggled with fitness issues in recent years.
