Jujutsu Kaisen: The Execution Film Strives to Resolve the Anime's Biggest Issue

JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution is not entirely an brand-new feature. Instead, the recent cinematic release from the JuJutsu Kaisen supernatural series acts as a recap of the show's sophomore season combined with the initial episodes of its third season, which launches the Culling Games narrative from the manga series. This makes Execution, which has been given a new trailer, the first way to watch the beginning of the forthcoming season ahead of its 2026 January debut. The feature launches in Japan on Nov. 7, and in the United States and Canada on December 5.

The Culling Games Storyline

In the Culling Game arc, Elite sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu is introduced in the anime series and is assigned by sorcery authorities to execute his fellow student Yuji Itadori. Their highly anticipated battle occurs for the very first time on the silver screen, and if the animation team at Mappa have a treat as episodes 40 and 41 in store for audiences this holiday season, JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution may end up being the present that we've been waiting for.

The Thunderclap Issue

"Thunderclap episodes" from the second season is widely regarded as one of the greatest sequences in anime history, despite the significant debate in 2023 when the series first premiered. It was claimed that the animation team were suffering from crunch conditions to the point, and the released version that premiered at the time was unfinished and allegedly not what the team initially intended.

The Legendary Fight

The episode features a long-awaited battle between two strong jujutsu users, Sukuna versus Mahoraga. It includes experimental animation, excellent direction, and intense action. A later physical media version gave the animators a chance to add additional scenes to expand the fight. So it seemed possible Execution could improve the battle even more. However, looking at the new trailer, it's unclear if that battle has undergone further polishing. It'd be a shame if it didn't, because a moment so epic has to be experienced on the largest display with the best presentation possible.

The Second Season's Triumph

The second season of JuJutsu Kaisen elevated the franchise to become 2024's anime of the year, and when the Thunderclap episodes were aired consecutively, it was the subject of discussion for weeks in the series' fanbase. Fans had heard of the production challenges, which made them admire what they saw even more. People anxiously checked to see if the Blu-ray, released on March 18, would include new footage to the fight or to see if it was refined somewhat, and were thrilled to see precisely that, alongside reshades, smoother movement, and different color grading.

The Film's Potential

But the home video can only refine what has already been presented in the original airing, whereas the cinematic experience has the opportunity to do the sequence justice with additional alterations and freshly created footage.

A Magnum Opus

At present, these pair of installments serve as the magnum opus of JuJutsu Kaisen, and should be handled with care by the animation team, particularly given the controversy they underwent at the time. It's garnered the attention of anime fans all over the planet, and the Culling Games storyline is one of the most anticipated anime arcs of the following year. If the studio wants to start the year off right, run back the anime's greatest sequence once again in theaters with the finest version we've experienced so far.
