He contested the legal system and justice triumphed.
Sixty days following receiving a quarter-century plus sentence for attempting to “eradicate” Brazil’s democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro finally looks destined for incarceration.
Anticipated Imprisonment
The convicted instigator – who's been subject to home confinement in his mansion while a set of judicial steps and appeals play out – is broadly anticipated to be imprisoned in the near future, amid increasing speculation that he will be transferred to a notorious top-security prison.
Past Remarks on Inmates
Throughout Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the far-right former paratrooper showed scant sympathy for the country's prison population.
“Why should we give those scoundrels a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be fucked, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to end up in prison, you simply need is to avoid rape, abduction or theft.”
Jail Facility Debate
But the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, a group of four this week visited the complex in an seeming bid to prevent the high court from banishing him there.
The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, said he predicted the septuagenarian leader to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and feared his location could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal ailments – the result of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 election race – implied it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is highly critical. He will not be able to manage if they move him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the standard of prison meals.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells accommodating forty detainees: “It's virtually one square meter per prisoner.
“We conversed to the inmates and they grumble, of course, of the awful meals,” added the senator.
Backers Voice Concerns
He is not the lone figure expressing views prior to the ex-leader's expected imprisonment.
Penning in a major publication, one more backer, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the largest unfairness in its record”.
“This is an wrong that gnaws the souls of many people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.
Varied Popular Reaction

But his anticipated jailing has also gladdened the feelings of numerous others who think he should be imprisoned for conspiring to prevent his successor from taking power – and even plotting to have him murdered.
Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the incumbent administration's allied group, said: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a hole. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. No one wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to obtain proper care – but proper treatment in prison. He must not continue being his personal jailer for his lifetime.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have long celebrating the severe conditions of inmates, had abruptly become aware to their rights. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently claimed that civil liberties were not for offenders – decided to tour a penitentiary to find out what circumstances are actually like,” he said.
“He is a lawbreaker,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, degrading handling”.
Likely Prison Environment
Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now contains about fourteen thousand prisoners, his probable destination looks to be a nearby prison for police officers and other “unique” detainees called Papudinha (Little Papuda).
His potential cell are far more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro had while occupying the stunning official residence, approximately 20 kilometers away.
Based on reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely inhabit in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – roughly the area of a couple of car spots – and includes a 130 square foot bathroom with a shower and a 12 sq metre veranda. “He could be authorized to have a television and also a small fridge in his quarters as long as they were provided by his family,” information stated.
Political Responses
Senator Lucas criticized the speculated plan to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his fate in the {
