Democrats Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and penalized "through capital punishment" following their release of a disputed video.
The Message That Provoked the Controversy
The clip, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who in the past served in armed forces or intelligence roles.
"Like us, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this national charter," the lawmakers affirmed in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our constitution aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our statutes are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can decline unlawful commands, you must decline illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that violate the legal system or our founding principles."
The Former President's Furious Reaction
The video message seemed to trigger a furious reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he wrote: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our United States. Their comments cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials Respond
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a combined statement denouncing the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no position in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who participated in the video all acted our country with exceptional national pride and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and risky calls for execution against members of Congress, and call on House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to guarantee the protection of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged online messages and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the announcement continued.
Representatives' Firm Response
The officials who were featured in the video also released a response.
"We are ex-military personnel and defense specialists who value this nation and swore an pledge to protect and support the national charter of the United States," they declared. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we plan to honor it. No warning, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that important obligation."
"The significant point is that the president views it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to restate the legal requirements," they stated. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their support as they execute their pledge to the national charter and obligation to follow only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "All citizens must unite and censure the ex-president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a period for principled stance."
Additional Governmental Comments
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's remarks and published on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the capital punishment of elected officials."
He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. All senators, every Representative, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should censure this without delay and without qualification."
The GOP leader supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This represents very risky, you have important representatives of Congress instructing troops to ignore directives, I think that represents without precedent in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also reportedly informed the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the crime of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to parse the terminology and decide all that."
White House Statement
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when asked by a journalist, "Does the president want to kill members of Congress?", the executive branch representative replied: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the representative stated. "You have current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to arrange a digital communication to individuals of the American armed forces, to current military personnel urging them to defy the commander in chief's legal commands."
She added: "The purity of our armed forces rests on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can result in casualties, it can result in confusion, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
