Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to arrange a place to stay when I arrived, but when I arrived, a major event was happening and every single budget hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.

Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport – only to discover the local airport, not like the one back home, closes 24 hours. Not knowing what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and found myself drifting near the casino, reasoning it was a place to spend those hours in an establishment that was open 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for acing a crucial interview the next morning, but as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.

Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.

Apparently, I appeared confused as a female student spotted me wandering around downtown and asked if everything was alright. I explained my situation and right away she offered I could crash on the floor in her student dorm at the local university – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She even offered some food: one of the sandwiches she had from her part-time job. I had access to a hot shower and somewhere safe and safe for the evening.

In retrospect, it’s clear to me the significant risk she undertook as a woman letting a man who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. Back then I operated under my male privilege bubble and did not consider to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she did that – but still incredibly thankful.

Ultimately, I did not attending the Australian National University, and I lost touch with her again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of generosity. I hope life has returned her act of kindness abundantly. The world needs more folks who show such kindness.
